15th-century sculpture damaged at NYC's Met

NEW YORK — A 15th-century sculpture at The Metropolitan Museum of Art was damaged after it came loose from its moorings and fell to the floor.

The museum says the damaged piece is a terra-cotta sculpture of Saint Michael the Archangel by Andrea della Robbia.

It fell late Monday night or early Tuesday. It had been hanging over a doorway in the European Paintings and Decorative Arts Galleries since 1996.

The museum said Tuesday that a preliminary investigation shows the 62-inch-by-32-inch piece can be repaired.

As a result of the accident, the Met is inspecting all its pedestals and wall mounts.
